The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is a branch of Iran’s military tasked with protecting the country’s Islamic system. It was established after the Iranian Revolution in 1979 and has evolved to become a powerful and influential entity within Iran, involved not only in military operations but also in political and economic activities. They are responsible for some of the gravest human rights violations in Iran.
On January 8, 2020, the IRGC shot down Ukraine Airlines flight 752, killing all 176 people on board, including 55 Canadians and 30 permanent residents.
In 2019, the United States declared the IRGC a terrorist organization, citing evidence that the IRGC supports and funds various terror groups across the Middle East, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. This includes providing financial, logistical, and material support to these groups, thereby contributing to instability and conflicts in the region via terrorism.
A Global News investigation found evidence that Canada has become a safe-haven for groups like the IRGC, who threaten the lives of Iranian-Canadians. The Trudeau government has given no explanation as to why they haven’t listed the IRGC as a terrorist entity despite strong advocacy from the Iranian community amongst others.
