What is a kibbutz?
A kibbutz, is a unique town to Israel, that are built as small, close knit communities.
The word stems from the Hebrew word meaning a collective gathering. A kibbutz is a communal dwelling where people live and work together based on socialist principles.
Kibbutzim tend to focus on agricultural development, and have helped contribute to Israel’s status as a world leader in agricultural technologies and a major exporter of fresh produce.
The first kibbutz in Israel was started in 1910 in the North, and today there are almost 300 kibbutzim throughout the country.
Sadly, on October 7 2023, at least 5 kibbutzim around the Gaza Envelope were savagely and barbarically attacked, leaving over 1,200 dead and 240 people being taken hostage by terrorists, from more than 40 countries, ranging in age from 10 months to 85 years old. Many of these kibbutzim were completely destroyed by Hamas terrorists, despite many of the members of these communities being from the more progressive political leanings, who worked hard to form bridges with their Palestinian neighbours, and hired thousands of Gazans in them prior to October 7th. Many of them were involved in organizations and programs aimed at building peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
